Hi, Bruce.

Terrific compilation. Thanks!

A couple of mine that deal with gender issues:

2003 “Women, Men and Market Gardens: Gender Relations and Income Generation in Rural Mali.” Human Organization 62(2): 166-177.

2003 “Losing Ground: Gender Relations, Commercial Horticulture and Threats to Local Plant Diversity in Rural Mali” (a chapter in an volume titled: Women and Plants: Gender Relations in Biodiversity Management and Conservation, Zed Press and St. Martin’s Press. Pp. 229-242.)

Dear Bruce

Here are two references on rural Mali that I find useful

Turritin, Jane 1988 « Men, Women, and Market Trade in Rural Mali, West Africa ». Canadian Journal of African Studies / Revue Canadienne des Études Africaines. XXII, 3: 583-604.

Best wishes,

Aïssatou Mbodj

I'm currently compiling a review of the scholarly literature on marriage and gender in contemporary Mali, and would like to share my preliminary bibliography (attached in Word format) with the MANSA list in hopes that others will both find useful information in it and inform me of significant sources I have missed.

While this bibliography is primarily concerned with Mali-specific research, it does include some sources that have a sub-regional or regional scope, as well as others pertaining to Mali's neighbors. I've done my best to include anglophone and francophone scholarship touching on themes of gender and gender roles, fertility, sexuality, and marriage. Please let me know of any relevant sources you think I should add to this bibliography. I would be especially interested to learn of literature on nomadic and/or rural populations which are mostly absent from this list. Thanks!

Merci !
