Subject: [Mansa-l] Mali on PRI's The World

Dear MANSA friends,

Some of you may enjoy the link below. A few days ago I was able to reminisce about my love for Mali in the context of the Geo Quiz on PRI's The World (which airs every weekday on many public radio stations across the US).

http://www.pri.org/stories/2014-04-28/geo-quiz-countrys-name-means-hippo-and-its-capital-translates-crocodiles-back

As I know there are many Bamanankan linguists out there, I wanted to clarify that I am aware of the various translations of Mali (also 'it's our boat') and Bamako (also the Bama creek). I went w/ hippo and crocodile's back in order to keep it fun and light for this non-scholarly audience.

I hope to see many of you at the Mande Studies conference this June.

Bill
