Dear colleagues

This mail is a call for collaboration between scholars who have
Recorded oral traditions on Samori.

The recent issue of Mande Studies ( volume 3) demonstrated that oral
traditions on Samori are alive, probably more than ever, in Guinea, Cote
dÍvoire, Mali, and Liberia. Samori once ruled parts of these countries in
his Empire, butlong since these countries have gone their own directions as
nation states.
In each of these nation states' national histories Samori has acquired the
status of an Empire builder and resistance leader. However, since each of
the three nations have gone through their own particular history, it is
To be expected that Samori is appreciated differently in national histories.
Moreover, Samori's position has become point of debate in the public domain
in the 1990s and 2000s, when national histories became point of debate.

Given this current interest in Samori, it is to be expected that oral
traditions about Samori flourish and may even be subject to change. Although
nowadays 'sanctified' as an epic, oral traditions on Samori may be diverse
in style, form and

Hence Tim Geysbeek and I initiated a long term project to publish a wide
range of oral traditions on Samori. The aim of this project is to monitor
historiographic processes and to appreciate Mande literary creativity as
well as mnemotechnical devices.

This message is a FIRST CALL to make a list of possible contributors. So if
you have collected material relevant to this topic, we request you to
contact us. Or if you know someone who has collected Samori traditions, we
would be very happy to contact this person.

Tim and I thank you all in advance.
Yours cordially,

Jan Jansen, Leiden University
